Madrid
By: Chelsea Olewnik & RoseMarie Feeley Global Perspectives 1 hr This article will be discussing Climate Change on Biodiversity in Madrid, Spain. The country Spain, is one of the oldest countries in Europe, where it’s located in south west of Europe. The city's population is estimated to be 3.2 million. Neighboring countries near Spain are Portugal, France, Morocco, Gibraltar, and Andorra. Madrid is the third largest city in Europe and is the capital of Spain. The city is located in the centre of Spain and other villages near. Since Madrid is the Capital of Spain, the government is benched there; as well as the Spanish monarch. Madrid has greatly influenced politics, education, entertainment, environment, media, fashion, science, and culture throughout Europe. The River Manzanares is just one of the bodies of waters that surrounds Madrid. Spain has been impacted by climate change, including the water, temperature, and industries that thrive in the city of Madrid. Climate change has affected the water in Spain and all over Europe. Spain depends on the water for food and other resources needed for survival. There have been, and continue to be, floods and droughts that are causing a challenge for the locals and animals. The quality of the water has also become worse with the increase of the effects of climate change. This has affected the fishing industry, causing the fish to either adapt to the different temperatures of water or become extinct. The rising of temperature in the area of Madrid has created heatwaves and forest fires that is causing life threatening issues to animals and people whom are located in the city. With the rising temperature, it has caused more heat in the city that could threaten the locals and animals that remain there. This would be done by causing problems with their lungs and to their health. Climate change is a very serious matter that is changing the way of life and biodiversity in all areas, including Madrid, Spain. Biodiversity is the variety of life in the world or in a particular habitat or ecosystem. Life has existed on Earth for about 3.5 billion years and over 95% of the species that existed have gone extinct. The government of Madrid, Spain holds Biodiversity Conservation Conferences that talk about saving life on Earth in all forms and keeping natural ecosystems functioning and healthy. The conservations has played a huge role in saving endangered species. The Biodiversity Conservation Conference group blame this ever growing problem on Global Warming. They believe the earth's average surface temperature has increased drastically due to greenhouse gases that are caused by humans. It has affected the habitats of numerous species, which have to adapt or migrate to areas with more favorable conditions. Biodiversity has a serious threat of the loss of habitat and destruction of land as a result of human activities. Animals are not only going to be the ones to suffer with climate change. Humans will soon be affected by the different change of temperature. Streams, rivers, lakes, oceans and land have already been effected. Other problems include the waste and ruin climate change is bringing to the beautiful city of Madrid. If this continues, it will cause a huge problem to the tourist industry, one of the biggest industries in Madrid. This will also affect the people in the city. In Madrid, Spain the local people have split opinions of the situation. Local fishermen that have been affected by the change of the water do believe there is a problem with biodiversity and climate change. It has affected their way of life. Fishermen are not able to feed their families or make a profit from their career. Other locals that depend on the fishermen to eat are forced to find different means for food. On the other hand, people that don’t see the change in biodiversity and the climate change in their city are those who have not been personally affected by this problem. Overall, it has to depend on others opinions to whether or not they believe biodiversity is being destroyed by climate change are a fault caused by humans. To improve the situation of the ruin of biodiversity and the extinction of animals caused by climate change, there should be programs to help save nature. We need to stop cutting down our forests and preserved forests to keep the animals that live in them safe. Instead driving a gas car, people should either carpool or use an electric car. In this major city a lot pollution is released in the air by natural gases. People must stop burning natural gases and start using solar in order to get their power. This will help lower the amount of greenhouse gases released into the atmosphere.
